Grease Trap Backup Prevention

The City of Charlotte

  • The City of Charlotte mandates that indoor grease traps are cleaned every 30 days and outdoor grease traps are cleaned every 90 days by a CLTWater approved grease handling and hauling company
  • All food service establishments shall have traps serviced by grease handling facilities approved by the Control Authority
  • The grease interceptor cannot have deteriorated baffles, leaks, missing tees, clogging or any other deficiencies
  • Restaurants must maintain on-site records of dates and means of disposal for a period of 3 years

Greenway Waste Solutions Suggestions

  • Post “no grease” signs above sinks and properly train staff
  • Dispose of food waste by recycling or solid waste removal
  • Recycle waste cooking oil
  • Do not pour grease down the sinks
  • Avoid or limit the use of garbage disposals

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a grease trap or grease interceptor?

A: Grease traps and grease interceptors prevent FOG (fats, oils, and grease) and food solids from entering the sewer system. The traps are designed to let clean water exit the trap while capturing FOG and food solids.

Q: Why do I need a grease trap?

A: Grease traps are mandated by local municipalities for all food service establishments that introduce grease or oil into the sewer system. Grease traps also protect your sewer lines and prevent backup allowing you to operate without worry.

Q: When should you clean your grease trap?

A: The City of Charlotte Grease Trap Policy mandates that indoor traps are cleaned every 30 days and that outdoor traps are cleaned every 90 days. A good rule of thumb is that a trap must be emptied after one-fourth (1/4) of its contents has been filled with FOGS. After 1/4th of the trap has been filled, the trap is no longer effective. Other warning signs of an overdue grease trap cleaning are foul kitchen odors and drain backup.

Q: What is your service area?

A: North Carolina: Charlotte, Belmont, Concord, Cornelius, Davidson, Denver, Gastonia, Harrisburg, Huntersville, Lake Norman, Matthews, Mt Holly, Mooresville, Pineville, Weddington.

South Carolina: Fort Mill, Indian Land, Lake Wylie, Lancaster, Rock Hill, Tega Cay, Waxhaw
